The Path To How Something Got Done
Step One: It started with a letter from Andrew Vachss to Oprah!
If you have read my columns, you have seen my mention of child advocate and attorney, Andrew Vachss, who I had the privilege to meet (see story). He is the author of 15 books and one of the founders of the National Association for the Protection of Children, a lobbying organization for the protection of children.
Oprah received a letter from Andrew taking issue with her personal position on child abuse. Subsequently, she had him on the show!
(The Oprah episodes with Mr. Vachss use to be on You Tube, but I can't find them now. There were four parts. It was powerful interview and a reality-check about child protection and abuse, When this warrior talks, Oprah listens-and so do I! I will keep looking for them and let you know if I find them).

Step Two: Based on her powerful interviews with Andrew Vachss, she invited the leaders of The National Center for the Protection of Children on the show. This was timely because Congress was on the eve of passing new ground-breaking laws for the protection of kids but they didn't have all the needed votes!
Step Three: As result of this one Oprah show, half million people wrote their representative in .DC! The laws got passed!!! "PROTECT Our Children Act" was signed into law on October 13, 2008!

Andrew Vachss' web-site in vast resource on the subject of child abuse and protection. I recommend everyone to spend some time there and get a deeper understanding of the seriousness of this problem.
As always, I want to thank Mr. Vachss for teaching me that "behavior is the truth". Hopefully, some day, I will get to meet you again, brother. Thank you for your kind words that day. I will continue to support the children of the secret--this is my vow.

I promised in my last newsletter that I would list some you-tube videos that I hoped you would find inspiring. Here you go, brothers and sisters:
El Chocolate's flamenco singing has been part of my life for 25 years. He was considered the best of the old school. I saw him on Broadway many years ago and it changed me; I felt my soul so deeply in that moment. I learned recently he passed a few years ago. I feel so lucky to be able to see him on a half- dozen you tube videos. The one I picked out is in set in a very unusual place! In the last minute of the video, they do a close up of him and like me I hope you see the magic and deep passion of flamenco-it's the truth. And check out the other ones of him--so moving. If you understand this feeling, brothers and sisters--you are my friend for life!
Eckhart Tolle
Its Eckhart Tolle's videos they have finally translated his powerful message to me. I just couldn't absorb his philosophy in his books and cds. But when I saw him on video, I got it! Here is a selection I recommend:

Runaway Train
A clip from the movie staring John Voight and Eric Roberts who are escaped convicts, trapped on a runaway train. This one scene penetrated me deeply and taught me something about humility. Voight is so deep in this character--as ex-actor--I was blown away. I invite you to feel it too!

The Pumpkin People
Everything Counts
A few weeks before Halloween, everyday I would drive by what they call "The Pumpkin Patch". I could see maybe two hundred pumpkins for sale. The patch is actually the parking lot in front of a local church! Each time I passed by, I would get this strong feeling to stop and buy a pumpkin. Halloween is a big thing in my house. The title is common theme here on retreats with clients; they can't seem to cross over from an intellectual spirituality to a "knowing". Home Security Tip
I know, a strange item to have in a spiritual newsletter! A few months back, I heard some walking in my backyard about 1 AM and, of course, I called the police. Afterwards, something dawned on me. Always have a phone in your bedroom. If someone breaks into the house at night or there is an intruder outside, it's smart to have that phone by your bed. Now, I charge my cell phone at night in my bedroom

PS. Parenting Tip
I was driving down my street and I noticed a woman pushing a baby carriage while talking on her cell phone. It occurred to me that she is really not being present with her baby. You can be sure that baby senses this.
Of course, I don't know if it was an emergency or unavoidable call that woman was taking but I thought the idea was sound. When you are with your children, no matter how young, try and stay off your cell phone! Ask yourself one question: "Can this call wait or be taken later?" One of the primary issues with adults is they didn't feel acknowledged as children. Lets raise a generation that feel they matter. Each moment of presence with your kids, counts so much, brothers and sisters.
